Trey Mancini, a prominent figure in Major League Baseball known for his comeback after a cancer diagnosis, announced his retirement from the sport on Tuesday morning. The 34-year-old concluded an eight-season MLB career, during which he became a favorite among fans and within clubhouses.

Mancini shared his decision through an Instagram post, reflecting on his journey in baseball. He finishes his career with a .263 batting average and 129 home runs. He expressed immense gratitude for the game, which he stated has been a focal point of his life for 30 years.

Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the eighth round in 2013 out of Notre Dame, Mancini made his MLB debut with the team in 2016. He hit 83 home runs for the Orioles between 2017 and 2019.

In March 2020, a routine spring training blood test led to a diagnosis of Stage 3 colon cancer. Mancini missed the entire 2020 season but returned to play for the Orioles in 2021 after being declared cancer-free, hitting 21 home runs that year.

Mid-season in 2022, Mancini was traded to the Houston Astros, contributing to their World Series victory. He notably made a diving defensive play at first base in Game 5 of the series. He then signed with the Cubs in 2023, playing in 79 games, and did not play in 2024.

Mancini initiated a comeback in 2025, signing a minor-league deal with the Diamondbacks, followed by another minor-league deal with the Angels before the 2026 season. After considering retirement in early May 2026 due to a 1-for-16 slump in Triple A, he adjusted his hitting and earned a return to the major leagues on June 8, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. He was designated for assignment on June 17, 2026, after playing in four games and recording four hits in 13 at-bats.

In his retirement announcement, Mancini thanked his wife, Sara, for her unwavering support through difficult and euphoric times. He also extended gratitude to his parents, sisters, family, teammates, coaches, and the medical staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital, crediting their expertise with saving his life. Mancini concluded his message by thanking baseball fans, particularly those in Baltimore, for their connection and support throughout his career.
