## Blake Frazier Elected President of S.C.A.N.A.

Blake Frazier, who grew up in Latta and currently resides in Johns Island, has been elected as the new president of the South Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (S.C.A.N.A.). The organization represents over 1600 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and nurse anesthesia residents throughout South Carolina.

Among Frazier’s key priorities is the modernization of South Carolina’s Nurse Practice Act. This initiative aims to update longstanding supervision requirements for CRNAs, providing healthcare facilities with greater flexibility in how they utilize their anesthesia workforce. S.C.A.N.A. advocates for the removal of statutory barriers, such as physician and dentist supervision requirements for CRNAs, to allow hospitals and other healthcare facilities to develop anesthesia care models based on the specific needs of their patients and communities.

A 2025 report from the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services indicated that six rural hospitals in South Carolina have closed since 2012. The report, referencing an August 2025 analysis from the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform, also noted that seven additional rural hospitals in the state were at risk of closure, with four facing immediate risk. In addition to addressing these issues, Frazier plans to strengthen the pipeline of future CRNAs in South Carolina.
