NEW YORK — The NFL said Tuesday it has no issue with how the Philadelphia Eagles cared for quarterback Jalen Hurts before and after his blood clot diagnosis, and the team will face no discipline. Hours later, the NFL Players Association said it knew of no league investigation into that care and called for one.

League officials took questions at the fall owners meeting in New York. Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL chief medical officer, said he had full confidence in the Eagles medical staff and described its handling as conservative, patient-focused and careful at every stage. He added that the clots were caught quickly, and that many people outside of pro sports might have gone undiagnosed with the same condition.

Jeff Miller, the league executive vice president who oversees communications and policy, said the league pieced together the sequence of events with input from the Eagles staff, people following the case, and the independent hospital and physicians who treated Hurts. A written league statement said officials kept in touch with team doctors and with the Cleveland Clinic in London during each phase of care.

The union disputed that picture. Its statement said the league had earlier told the players association it did not plan to review Hurts and his care, and that facts need to be established through a full investigation before anyone draws conclusions.

Hurts flagged the calf problem to the medical staff following a practice, then started three days later against Jacksonville in London on Oct. 11. London specialists initially called it a superficial clot in a vein near the skin. The team has since said he has deep vein thrombosis and clots in both lungs. He is on injured reserve, is projected to sit out the remainder of the year and cannot return to football activities while he remains on blood thinners.
