LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Mayor Karen Bass heads into Tuesday’s election locked in a tie with City Councilmember Nithya Raman, a former ally who jumped into the race late and has the backing of the local Democratic Socialists of America chapter.

A Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll released last week put each candidate at 40% among likely city voters, with 19% still undecided. The online survey of 2,197 likely voters ran Oct. 19 to Oct. 25 in English and Spanish and has an error margin of roughly 3 points.

That is a sharp swing from the same poll in late September, when Raman led 39% to 28% and a third of voters had not picked a side. Much of the Bass recovery came from conservatives who backed the reality TV personality who finished third in the June primary: 41% of them now favor Bass, compared with 14% for Raman.

Age has split the electorate. Among likely voters under 30, Raman leads Bass 69% to 15%, and the gap is similar among voters in their 30s. Older voters, though, are returning ballots at a much higher rate. Tracking through Oct. 28 showed just 13% of voters 18 to 34 had turned in a ballot, while 47% of voters older than 65 already had.

Bass, 73, has run on her record on crime and housing while facing criticism over the Palisades fire response, homelessness and city services. At 45, Raman has never before sought a citywide post. Bass supported Raman in her 2024 council reelection, and Raman endorsed Bass in January before reversing herself weeks later.
