CHAPIN, S.C. — Chapin High School English teacher Katherine Ramp is taking a seat on South Carolina’s Learning Disorders Task Force, joining Piney Woods Elementary special education teacher Emily McLain after both got three-year appointments from State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver.
Lexington-Richland School District Five cast the news as a chance for local educators to shape statewide work on reading disorders. The nine-person Learning Disorders Task Force pulls in school psychology, the South Carolina International Dyslexia Association, and classroom teachers from special education and early grades.
Ramp is filling the high school teacher slot on the panel. McLain was recognized for knowing how reading struggles show up for students, with dyslexia among the challenges she sees, from her special education classroom at Piney Woods.
The advisory group has a longer legal path. On May 18, 2018, Governor Henry McMaster put Act 213 on the books so a Learning Disorders Task Force of education and medical professionals could work with the department on reading difficulties.
District Five Chief Academics Officer Tina McCaskill framed the picks as a point of pride for the district and a way for those teachers to carry classroom know-how to students far beyond Chapin and Irmo.
Chapin High School sits at 300 Columbia Ave, Chapin, SC 29036, inside Lexington-Richland School District Five. Campus directories list Ramp under Language Arts, and the main office number is 803-575-5400.
