Chapin South Carolina Wildlife Management Areas
The Wateree River Heritage Preserve WMA is an 11,500-acre SCDNR-managed bottomland tract along the lower Wateree River in southeastern Richland County — about 50 minutes SE of Chapin off Goodwill Road in Eastover. Chapin-area hunters use it as the best big-woods public deer and turkey ground within an hour's drive: hardwood bottoms, oxbow sloughs, and mature pine ridges that hold whitetail through the Zone 3 rut and give turkey hunters real gobbling terrain in April. Waterfowl hunters work the sloughs for wood ducks in early season.
Free public access from Goodwill Road, Eastover. SCDNR WMA permit required (included with any SC hunting license). Walk-in only to most tracts. Portions closed during dog-deer season Sep–Jan — check the SCDNR WMA map before entry.
Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve WMA sits on 195 acres of high loess bluffs above the Congaree River floodplain in southeastern Calhoun County — a 45-minute drive SE of Chapin. It is one of the closest draw-hunt properties to the Lake Murray area and is the go-to public land for Chapin hunters who want a low-pressure archery-only whitetail opportunity. The bluffs are heavy hardwood with beech, oak, and hickory over a cane understory. Turkeys use the bluff edges as strut zones in spring.
SCDNR draw hunts only (archery deer, spring turkey). Apply online at dnr.sc.gov during the annual draw window. No walk-in general access.
Manchester State Forest is the largest state forest within a 90-minute drive of Chapin — 26,200 acres of longleaf pine, upland hardwoods, and old sandhills country in Sumter County, about 55 minutes east. Managed by the SC Forestry Commission with SCDNR game regulations, Manchester is the marquee dove-field and quail management area near the Midlands and one of the best public turkey properties in the state. Whitetail hunters find pine-plantation edge and hardwood draws that hold deer through the November Zone 3 rut. Dove fields are planted annually and posted at manchesterstateforest.org.
Open to the general public. SC hunting license + WMA permit required. Some areas require dated permits (dove fields, still-hunt deer areas) via the Forestry Commission site. Camping at Poinsett State Park inside the forest.
Harbison State Forest is the closest publicly-managed hunting land to Chapin — 2,177 acres of mature loblolly, mixed hardwood, and creek bottoms bordering the Broad River just NW of Columbia, about 25 minutes SE of Chapin. It is primarily a recreation and demonstration forest (heavy trail use), but SCDNR permits limited-quota archery deer hunts each fall. The proximity makes it the closest public archery deer opportunity to Chapin — a real advantage for after-work hunts.
SCDNR limited-quota archery-only hunts. No general firearm season. Apply via SCDNR draw. Recreation use (trails, mountain biking) coexists with hunt weekends — quiet approach on foot required.
Sandhills NWR is a 45,348-acre longleaf-pine refuge in Chesterfield County, about 1 hour 15 minutes NE of Chapin near McBee — the closest federally-managed hunting land to the Lake Murray area. Managed by USFWS with cooperative SCDNR hunting regulations, Sandhills is famous among South Carolina hunters for its old-growth longleaf uplands, extensive prescribed-burn history, and consistently strong quail and turkey populations. The refuge holds limited-quota deer hunts (both firearms and archery) each fall — Chapin hunters who draw a permit get a genuine big-woods experience unavailable closer to home.

Broad River WMA is a 4,675-acre SCDNR tract along the Broad River in Fairfield County — about 45 minutes north of Chapin off Highway 215. It is the closest true public deer and turkey ground north of Chapin and the go-to for Lake Murray hunters who want to escape the pressure on Manchester State Forest. The property is a mix of hardwood river bottoms, pine plantations, and old fields; the Broad River corridor holds strong turkey numbers and the hardwoods produce consistent whitetail action through the Zone 3 rut.

Yes. South Carolina requires all hunters to hold a valid SC hunting license. Resident annual hunting license is $12 through SCDNR. For deer, turkey, or bear you also need a Big Game Permit ($6 annual resident). Hunting on any Wildlife Management Area requires an additional WMA permit ($30.50 annual resident). For migratory waterfowl, you need a federal duck stamp ($25) plus a state migratory waterfowl permit ($15.50). Yes — Sunday hunting has been legal on private land statewide in South Carolina since 2013. On state-run WMA lands, Sunday hunting is generally prohibited unless SCDNR specifically authorizes it for a particular tract or special hunt event. Always verify the specific WMA's rules on the SCDNR WMA map before hunting Sunday on public land. Chapin-area private landowners can hunt any day of the week during open season.

In SCDNR Game Zone 3 (which includes Chapin and all Lexington County) the deer bag limit for residents is 2 antlered per day and 5 antlered per season combined across all seasons and methods (private + WMA). Antlerless deer are limited to 2 per day with an 8-per-season cap in Zones 2-4, harvested with Individual Antlerless Deer Tags valid on private land from Sept 15 and on WMA lands per each tract's rules. Non-residents get 4 antlered per season. Every deer must be tagged at the point of kill and reported through SC Game Check by midnight the day of harvest.

No — the Chapin area is in SCDNR Game Zone 3 and there is no open bear hunting season here. South Carolina's regulated bear hunt is confined to Game Zone 1 (the upstate mountain zone in Oconee, Pickens, and Greenville counties) with a still-hunt season in mid-October and a party dog-hunt season in late October. Occasional bear sightings occur in the Midlands, but they are not a huntable population and any encounter should be reported to SCDNR.
