Yes. All anglers age 16 and older need a SC fishing license to fish public waters in Lexington County. SC residents pay $10 for an annual freshwater license. Non-residents pay $35 annually or $11 for a 3-day license. Licenses are available at SCDNR.sc.gov or at local sporting goods and tackle shops. Two Free Fishing Days — May 25 (Memorial weekend) and July 4 — require no license.

Lake Murray is the marquee fishery — 50,000 acres, 1,000+ miles of shoreline, trophy stripers year-round, and one of SC's best largemouth bass and crappie populations. Access from Chapin is via Dreher Island State Park (fastest), Bomb Island Landing, or the Lake Murray Dam area. Lake Monticello, 30 minutes north in Fairfield County, is a 6,800-acre deep-water reservoir that offers a quieter trophy striper alternative to Lake Murray — Frazier Landing off SC-99 is the primary public access. Lake Wateree, 45 minutes east in Kershaw County, holds excellent crappie and blue catfish. For small-water bass on ponds, the WMA lakes at Manchester State Forest (30 minutes east) are open to the public with a WMA permit. All require an SC freshwater fishing license (age 16+).

Lake Murray crappie fishing has three distinct seasons. The pre-spawn (mid-February through mid-March) sees crappie stage in 8-12 feet on brush piles and creek channel edges — this is when big slabs (14-16 inches) are caught long-line trolling small jigs. The spawn (mid-March through late April, water 58-65°F) pushes fish into 3-8 feet of water around shallow brush, dock pilings, blowdowns, and stumps in the major creek arms. Bomb Island, Bear Creek, Bull Creek, and the flooded timber on the north shore near Chapin are the historic hot zones. Minnows under a slip float, small chartreuse or pink 1/16 oz jigs, or Bobby Garland Baby Shad rigged on 1/32 oz jig heads all produce. Summer (May-September) crappie suspend over deep brush in 15-25 feet — long-line trolling multiple jigs at 0.7-1.1 mph is the go-to. Fall (October-November) sees another shallow bite as water cools. SC daily limit: 20 crappie, 8-inch minimum size.

Lake Murray is fantastic kayak water when the wind cooperates. Launch from Dreher Island State Park's kayak-friendly beach area for calm-water access to Bear Creek and the north-shore coves. On breezy days, tuck up into the smaller creek arms rather than fighting the main lake — 15+ mph winds make Lake Murray a chop-fest. For river kayak fishing, the Broad River from Peak Landing to Alston (Newberry County) is an 8-mile day float with class I-II shoals holding native smallmouth bass. The Lower Saluda from Corley Island to the I-77 bridge is another classic float, though releases from Lake Murray dam can change flow rapidly — check the schedule and always wear a PFD. Kayak-specific tackle: Ned rigs, tubes, and small crankbaits cover 90% of the water you'll fish.

Three rivers within an hour of Chapin offer distinct fisheries. The Lower Saluda (tailwater below Lake Murray dam, 20 minutes south) is SC's premier year-round trout fishery — stocked brown and rainbow trout, plus smallmouth bass, redbreast sunfish, and channel catfish. Wading is legal; guided drift trips run out of Columbia. The Broad River near Peak and Alston (30-45 min north) is one of SC's best native smallmouth bass rivers, with a scenic kayak float through class I-II shoals. Redbreast sunfish, rock bass, and flathead catfish also thrive here. The Congaree River south of Columbia (45 min) holds trophy catfish (blue cats over 60 lbs are common), striped bass in spring, and largemouth in the backwaters. All three require an SC freshwater fishing license.

Yes — the Lower Saluda River below the Lake Murray dam is South Carolina's only significant year-round trout fishery. SCDNR stocks brown trout and rainbow trout heavily from November through May in about 10 river miles of the tailwater. Cold water released from the deep dam (typically 50-55°F even in July) keeps the trout alive through summer, though flows can spike rapidly with dam releases — never wade without checking the SCE&G Lake Murray release schedule first. Nymphing with Pat's Rubber Legs, Zebra Midges, and San Juan Worms under an indicator is the standard technique. Streamer fishing peaks October-March. Access: Riverbanks Zoo Park (Columbia), Corley Island Landing, and the 12th Street Extension parking area. Daily limit: 5 trout aggregate; only 2 brown trout may exceed 15 inches. Any legal tackle allowed.
