CHAPIN, S.C. — Residents who want a say in a proposed roundabout where Old Lexington Highway meets Wessinger Road near Chapin have until Sunday, Nov. 15, to send their comments to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Feedback can be left directly on the SCDOT project page for the intersection at projectportal.scdot.gov, where the plan also appears on the department’s list of public comment and meeting notices.
People who would rather not comment online can reach project manager Joey McIntyre by email at [email protected], by phone at 803-737-1842, or by mail to SCDOT, 955 Park Street, Columbia, SC 29201. The comment window opened Oct. 15.
SCDOT announced the project on Monday, Oct. 19. The department says a roundabout would make the intersection safer, keep traffic moving more smoothly and fix shortcomings in the existing roadway. The state numbers the roads as S-83 for Old Lexington Highway and S-233 for Wessinger Road, and the project map places the work in the Chapin area of Lexington County.
Old Lexington Highway is one of the main roads into Chapin and links the town with its schools and with Lexington. Chapin Intermediate School sits on the same highway at 1130 Old Lexington Highway.
Under the current timeline, the state would buy any needed right of way this fall, with construction set to begin in summer 2027. Building the roundabout is expected to take about 18 months.
Transportation officials say engineering work will continue for some time and that updates will be posted on the project page, where residents can also sign up to follow the work and get notices by email.
