High school football game at night

CHAPIN, S.C. — Chapin High School built a 14-point lead at home Friday night, Oct. 23, but Lexington rallied and won 31-24 in overtime in a Region 3 Class 5A football game at Cecil Woolbright Stadium.

Quarterback Tyler Black staked the Eagles to a 14-0 lead with a pair of first-half touchdown throws. Connor Finney caught the first one late in the opening quarter, at the 3:23 mark, and Ny’shawn Palmore took a swing pass into the end zone for the second, at 4:02 of the second period. The Wildcats cut it to 14-7 at the 1:19 mark of the half when Easton Crocker flipped a 10-yard shovel pass to Victor Kaczenski.

The Wildcats tied the game early in the third quarter, and Chapin went back in front 17-14 on a field goal. Lexington’s Ian Danson returned the next kickoff for a touchdown, and a Wildcats field goal made it 24-17.

Black answered with another scoring pass to Finney that tied the game at 24 with a little more than three minutes to play. Chapin’s Rory Dreher then picked off a deep Crocker throw inside the 5-yard line to end Lexington’s last chance in regulation.

In the extra period the Wildcats went on offense first, and it took only a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Crocker to put them back on top. The Eagles then marched inside the Lexington 10 and reached the 6, but the Wildcats defense stopped them there to end the game.

The loss leaves Chapin at 5-5 overall and 1-3 in Region 3, fourth in the region standings, with no more regular-season games on its schedule. The Eagles went 3-2 at home this fall. Lexington improved to 6-3 and plays River Bluff next Friday, in a game that decides second place in Region 3 and a home date in the first round of the playoffs.

Chapin High School, home of the Eagles, is at 300 Columbia Ave. in Chapin and competes in SCHSL Class 5A, Region 3.
