WATERFORD, Conn. — Chapin native Kate Stebbins finished second in the women’s 5-kilometer race Saturday, Nov. 7, at the D3 Challenge in Waterford, Conn., leading the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to the team win.
Stebbins, a senior, crossed the line in 19:12. Only one runner beat her, a University of Hartford senior who won the race.
Connecticut College hosted the meet at Stenger Farm Park, and the University of Hartford also sent runners. The academy described the event as a lighter, late-season race that gives the sub-varsity runners on each team a chance to compete.
Coast Guard edged the host school 32-35 for the women’s title, and Hartford placed third. Behind Stebbins, freshman Danielle Wierschke took third in 19:26 and sophomore Gabrielle Shord was fourth in 19:27. Junior Hannah Edwards placed 10th and sophomore Madeleine Spaner was 15th to round out the scoring five.
Head coach Greg Ahnrud said the course was soft and wet after a day of rain and that he was pleased with the times his runners posted under those conditions.
The Coast Guard men also won their race, sweeping the top five places for a perfect 15 points.
Stebbins is a management major. The academy roster lists Chapin as both her hometown and her high school.
The team turns next to the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn. The Coast Guard women were ranked sixth in the most recent regional poll.
