High school football game at night

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina comes out of its bye week as a narrow home underdog, with sportsbooks making No. 11 Tennessee a favorite of a point and a half or so for Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium.

FanDuel posted the Vols as 1.5-point favorites when lines went up Sunday. DraftKings started at 2.5 before sliding to 1.5 by the afternoon. The over/under also climbed a point, from 49.5 to 50.5.

Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. Eastern on Oct. 24, and the game will be on national television.

The Gamecocks sit at 3-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Their most recent outing was their best: a 38-19 road win on Oct. 10 over a Florida team ranked 16th at the time, which ended a three-game skid and eased some of the pressure on coach Shane Beamer. Before that, South Carolina dropped a 41-34 SEC opener to Mississippi State and fell 35-34 in overtime to Kentucky on Oct. 3.

Tennessee arrives 6-1, 3-1 in the SEC, after handling then-No. 6 Alabama 26-10 in Knoxville, a result that lifted the Vols three spots in both major polls. Defense is driving their season. They rank among the top 10 nationally in points allowed and top the country with 30 sacks through seven games, though their offense has not topped 26 points against an SEC opponent.

Columbia has been a tough stop for the Vols. They have won just two of their last eight trips to Williams-Brice dating to 2008. Their last visit, in 2022, ended in a 63-38 South Carolina win that knocked Tennessee out of College Football Playoff contention and cost the Vols their starting quarterback to a season-ending knee injury.

The programs have not met since Tennessee won 41-20 at home in 2023. The yearly series ended when the SEC grew to 16 teams in 2024 and dropped its divisions.
