CHAPIN, S.C. — The Chapin High girls volleyball team takes the longest road trip of its postseason so far on Monday, when the eighth-seeded Eagles visit No. 1 seed Woodmont in Piedmont for a second-round state playoff match at 6 p.m.
Chapin earned the trip by getting past ninth-seeded James F. Byrnes 3-1 in Wednesday’s opener. The Eagles took the first set 25-18, dropped the second 22-25, and closed out the match with 25-18 and 25-20 wins. It was their second straight victory and lifted them to 12-4.
Woodmont is a much taller order. The Wildcats come in at 38-2 and drew a first-round bye as the top seed in their half of the bracket. Setter Riley Gross and hitters Mallory Mizell and Sam Willis have driven a team that swept its previous opponent with every set decided by double digits.
A win would keep Chapin alive in a bracket that ends with the state title matches on Nov. 5 and 7, both to be played at Dreher High in Columbia.
